Axel Witsel joins OGC Nice

Axel Witsel is the newest addition to OGC Nice, beginning a new chapter in a career that has included spells in some of the biggest leagues in European football.

The 37-year-old Belgium international joins the French club after representing Girona last season, making 32 appearances. Witsel has signed a one-year contract, with an option for a further season.

The move to Nice represents his first experience in Ligue 1, following a career that has taken him through Belgium, Portugal, Russia, China, Germany and Spain.

Developed at Standard Liège, Witsel later represented Benfica, Zenit, Tianjin Quanjian, Borussia Dortmund, Atlético de Madrid and Girona, building a career at the highest level and collecting several domestic honours along the way.

For the Belgian national team, he has made 140 senior appearances and scored 12 goals. Witsel has featured at four FIFA World Cups, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, and was part of the generation that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 tournament.

Axel Witsel’s experience, versatility and leadership will now be at the service of OGC Nice as he takes on a new challenge in French football.

AS1 wishes Axel Witsel every success in this new stage of his career.
